The following information regarding qualification procedures for the USA Track & Field (USATF) National Championships, to be held at Husky Stadium on the University of Washington campus from July 28 through August 2, 1998, is limited to athletes residing within the host association, the Pacific Northwest Association (PNA).  The PNA consists of the State of Washington, west of the crest of the Cascade Mountains.

Athletes residing in other assocations should check with their Regional Coordinator regarding qualification procedures for their respective assocation and region.  More information regarding your local USATF can be obtained at the USATF Association website.

To be eligible to participate in the PNA Junior Olympics qualifying meets, an athlete must be a member of the Pacific Northwest Association of USA Track & Field, and not yet be 19 years old as of August 2, 1998.  The cost of individual membership is $10.  A copy of a birth certificate, or other proof of age is also required.  Athletes can join at the preliminary meets, or contact Carol Langenbach at (206) 433-8868.  You do not have to be a member of a USATF club to participate in an individual event, but relays can only be entered by PNA member clubs.

First Round Qualifying Meets for Pacific Northwest Association Athletes
The first round of the Junior Olympics qualifying meets for athletes residing in Western Washington will be held the weekends of June 13 and June 27.  The meets on June 13 and June 27 will provide a total of 16 qualifiers in each event for the Association/Regional Meet, to be held July 18 at Shoreline Stadium, Shoreline, Washington.

The meet on June 13 will be at Lake Washington High School in Kirkland, with the top 6 finishers qualifying for the July 18 meet.  The 3 meets on June 27 will be held at Bellinghame Civic Field in Bellingham (top 3 qualify for July 18), Olympic High School, Silverdale (top 4 qualify for July 18), and Battleground High School, Battleground (top 3 qualify for July 18).

If you compete in the meet on June 13, you can also compete in one of the meets on June 27.  If you compete on June 13 and qualify for the July 18 meet, you will not displace any qualifiers from the June 27 meets by participating in those meets.

If you qualify for the July 18 Assocation/Regional Meet at any of the preliminary meets, you must register for the July meet at that time, before leaving the qualifying meet.

As the host assocation, the PNA qualifies 3 athletes in each event (the top 3 finishers on July 18) to the national meet this year, rather than participating in the usual regional meet qualifying process with athletes from Oregon and Eastern Washington.  For additional information about the qualifying meets, contact the following meet directors:
